The US Firm's Driverless Taxis Set to Arrive London Streets Starting 2026.
The US-based enterprise Waymo has declared that its driverless taxis will be operational for booking on London's thoroughfares starting next year.
London Becomes Pioneering European City for Autonomous Taxi Service.
London will become the inaugural European city to introduce an autonomous taxi service, akin to those already operational in San Francisco and several American locations employing Waymo's advanced technology.
First Trials to Begin with Safety Drivers.
Waymo confirmed that its vehicles are presently heading to London and will begin operating on the capital's roads in the coming weeks with experienced operators supervising the vehicles.
The company – originally formed as a derivative from the tech giant's autonomous vehicle program and belonging to the same parent group – stated it would increase services and partner with the Department for Transport and Transport for London to acquire the necessary approvals to deliver fully autonomous rides by 2026.
Growing Involvement in Self-Driving Transport Across London.
Further firms, including Uber and the UK-based technology firm Wayve, have also declared their own strategies to pilot driverless taxis in the city next year.
This comes after the UK authorities stating it would speed up rules enabling public trials to proceed before laws enabling self-driving vehicles is enacted in full.

Comprehensive Rollout Anticipated After Regulatory Framework Comes into Force.
A broader introduction of autonomous vehicles is projected in the UK after the related legislation fully takes effect in late 2027.

Waymo already has ties to Britain after launching its pioneering European research base in Oxford in 2019.
The company is furthermore introducing services in Tokyo using Jaguar Land Rover eco-friendly cars, marking its second current venture beyond the US.
“Evidence confirms how to effectively grow fully autonomous taxi services, and we can’t wait to bring the benefits of our systems to the United Kingdom,” remarked the company executive, noting that the technology was “making roads safer and transportation more inclusive”.

Waymo launched its driverless vehicles in 2020 and currently reports it has transported in excess of a vast number of riders in the United States.
Despite some concerning occurrences, Waymo indicated that statistics showed that cars operated by humans were linked to crashes that hurt pedestrians significantly more frequently than its driverless vehicles.
