South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem Inspects Oregon ICE Office With Right-Wing Figures

The South Dakota governor, who holds the position of the homeland security secretary, inspected the ICE facility in Portland on Tuesday. During her visit, she observed a limited demonstration outside, which differs significantly to the fiery "siege" claimed by former President Donald Trump.

Escorted by Right-Wing Media Figures

The secretary was accompanied by a trio of MAGA-aligned personalities who were driven from the airport to the facility in her motorcade. The Department of Homeland Security has recently produced more aggressive social media content showing federal personnel carrying out immigration raids and firing tear gas at crowds.

Protest Scene

Local law enforcement cleared the street outside the facility in the southern Portland area before the Noem's arrival. A small group individuals, featuring one dressed as a fowl and another as a sea creature, were held back.

A song blared from a gathering spot nearby, with a refrain mentioning Trump and allegations. One protester called out to a official camera operator filming from the top of the building, asking whether the Department of Homeland Security had been renamed the "ministry of propaganda".

Media Access

Members of the press from mainstream media organizations were also held behind the police line outside, while the partisan influencers in her party—three right-wing influencers—broadcast digital content of the governor conducting federal personnel in religious observance inside, delivering a motivational speech, and advising a soldier of the militia to "Prepare".

Legal and Political Context

Noem has previously echoed the Trump's claims that the handful of protesters—who have gathered in their limited groups outside the ICE facility since June, including one in an amphibian suit—are "radicals" who have placed the facility "besieged", making the deployment of DHS agents essential.

But, on a recent weekend, a U.S. judge in the city halted his effort to federalize Oregon’s National Guard, determining that the president’s claims that the largely peaceful city was "being destroyed" were "untethered to the facts".

A day later, the judge, Judge Immergut—who was appointed to the court by the former president—broadened the ruling to block National Guard troops from elsewhere from being deployed in Oregon. This occurred after he responded to her first order by seeking to send members of the California National Guard to Oregon.

Rising Conflicts

Following Trump focused on the limited yet ongoing demonstration outside the ICE facility and made inaccurate statements that Portland is "war ravaged", a rising count of his followers, including right-wing figures, have appeared to confront the protesters.

Some of these clashes have caused fights and brawls, leading to apprehensions by the local law enforcement. One influencer was among those arrested after he tried to force his way a gathering on a walkway near the site and was engaged in a fight over an U.S. flag. Sortor had before seized the banner from a demonstrator who was destroying it.

The charges against Sortor were eventually dismissed after an outcry in right-wing outlets induced the head of the rights office of the Justice Department, the division head, to warn of a probe of the local police over supposed anti-conservative bias.

Female protesters Sortor was involved in an altercation with still are under legal scrutiny.

Government Statements

Recently, Governor Tina Kotek, the governor, alleged DHS agents in the office of trying to antagonize the demonstrators by using unnecessary levels of crowd control agents in a populated area and inviting right-wing personalities to document the crowd from the roof of the building. "They are deliberately inciting," she commented.

A trio of those conservative influencers were mentioned in a police report last month as "counter-protesters" who "constantly return and harass the demonstrators until they are attacked or exposed to irritants" and decline "frequent warnings from police to keep clear of" the protesters.

Influencer Activities

One influencer, a previous media worker who reinvented himself as a Christian nationalist influencer after being fired from his previous employer for ethical violations, posted video of the secretary observing from the top of the ICE facility at the small group of demonstrators below, including Jack Dickinson who sports a chicken costume to taunt the former president. The influencer captioned the video of her observing the placid scene below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".

Despite the difference between the claims from both officials that this facility is "under siege" from "domestic terrorists" and obvious footage of a handful of protesters in harmless costumes, the personalities with her continued to label the demonstrators as threatening extremists.

Discussion with Law Enforcement

During her visit, the secretary also engaged with the city's top cop, Bob Day, who has been depicted as "liberal" in right-wing outlets for allowing his officers to arrest Nick Sortor. In a online post on the engagement, the influencer claimed that the chief had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".

The secretary's convoy then drove out the office past a few of protesters on the street outside, including one wearing a animal wearing a sombrero.
