Severe Weather System Claudia Impact: Clean-up Efforts Continue as Arctic Blast Approaches

First responders are continuing their efforts to manage extensive inundation triggered by the passing storm.

A significant emergency was announced in Monmouth, south-east Wales, where residents were rescued or evacuated from flooded homes after torrential rain on Friday.

On Sunday, multiple major alerts, warning of life-threatening conditions, remained active, alongside 41 flood warnings in England. River levels on the Monnow exceeded all-time highs, topping levels seen during previous severe weather events.

Homes, businesses, transportation systems, and energy infrastructure all experienced damage from major water inundation in Welsh regions, officials confirmed.

Reports indicated that around 20 properties in parts of England experienced flooding due to the storm, such as properties in Cumbria.

As Storm Claudia moves away, a cold snap is forecast to move across the United Kingdom, bringing freezing temperatures and potential wintry precipitation.

Saturday night, the UK experienced its chilliest evening since late March, with mercury readings plunging to -7C in a Scottish location.

A decline of approximately five degrees will shift above-average November readings to lower figures across most of the UK, with peak temperatures on Sunday at around 11 degrees in south-east England before further cooling at the start of the week.

"While the storm moves south, atmospheric pressure to the northwest will bring a cold northerly flow across the country," a weather expert stated. "This results in much colder weather than lately, and, though mostly dry, there is also a risk of wintry hazards. Widespread frosts are expected, with temperatures falling as low as minus seven in some places next week, and daytime highs remaining in single figures."

He added, "Combine this with a brisk northerly wind, and there will be a marked chill factor. This represents a significant shift after a extended period of unseasonable warmth."

Public health agencies have activated a warning for low temperatures for several English regions from the start of the week, while flood management bodies have cautioned that flooding may persist throughout the coming days.

The low-temperature warning is effective from Monday morning until 8am next Friday, covering the eastern Midlands, West Midlands, North East, northwest, and Yorkshire region.
