Minecraft's Mounts of Mayhem Drop Brings Forth a Stunningly Wild Fresh Weapon to Your World
The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has landed — and it includes the first new weapon added to the game since the heavy club made its debut. The javelin is finally here and it might just alter your gameplay in Minecraft, particularly when you love chaos.
A Weapon Forged for Mounted Mayhem
The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds several new features and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the creators had long felt it was the moment to introduce a fresh combat tool.
"We knew initially that we desired a fresh armament that would add some more range, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," explained a lead developer. "We experimented with a few different ideas, but the lance was the one that both felt great when we tested our prototypes and also made sense for the use case."
If you're wondering whether mounted combat means you can joust against your companions on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an attack perfectly suited for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a primary use cases for the spear, and it's so much fun," the lead adds. "The spear has two attacks: You have the jab attack, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you lower your spear and get greater injury [with] the more momentum you have. So [it’s] perfect for knightly combat."
Sky-High Chaos and Underwater Adventures
The chaotic fun doesn't have to stop there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've explored The End, the developers have an truly outlandish idea. "If you are very late, [spears are] perfect for equipping the wings and flying forth and unleashing absolute pandemonium," she teases.
In other words: Sky jousting is now possible, and it should be made an competitive event immediately.
Another major addition in this latest drop is the underwater mount. This sea-dwelling mob, which is based on the seashells we've all been collecting for years, can be domesticated and ridden for deep-sea journeys. Not only will it move you through the water faster than swimming, it'll also maintain your oxygen levels, so there's no need to surface for a breath.
The other inclusions are largely things that are out to get you, as is the way of Minecraft. Unsurprisingly, there's also a rotting sea creature spawning in the water, sometimes with a Drowned on its back. If you are able to dispatch the Drowned, though, you can claim the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a puffer fish.
"We've pondered this problem for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it seemed like the right time to also introduce something for the ocean depths," the lead elaborates. "For the Nautilus specifically, we had a several proposals for aquatic rides that we wanted to try out, but the Nautilus initial artwork looked impressive, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was pre-existing in the game."
She also adds that there are actually a pair of variants of undead nautilus: standard and coral zombie Nautilus. "[The variants] add variety to what you find underwater."
Desert Dangers and Long-Awaited Tweaks
Other additions include the sun-proof skeletons, desert-exclusive skeletons that can withstand the sun, which means there's no getting away from them if you find yourself in that biome. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. Camel husks have an striking appearance that sees their ribs poking out. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be found at night with a lance-wielding undead rider on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some highly requested adjustments to riding horses. Now, you can cross waterways while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now available at the crafting table, so you can provide your steed with the best defense it deserves.
A Spicy Send-Off for the Year
All told, the last content update of the year is a solid offering. The spear on its own — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Combine that with the Nautilus, and new threats seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
The Mounts of Mayhem content drop is out now for Java and Bedrock editions of Minecraft.
