{'I could have killed them' - Lawson faces close call with F1 marshals
Formula 1 competitor Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals crossed the track right in his path
The dangerous situation happened on the third circuit when safety workers were spotted on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an premature pit stop to replace his damaged front wing
Driver's Immediate Reaction
Shortly afterward, the Formula 1 racer Lawson spoke to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"
"I honestly couldn't believe what I was witnessing"
"I came out on a fresh hard compound tires, and then I got to Turn One and there were just two dudes sprinting across the track"
"I nearly hit one of them, truthfully, it was extremely hazardous"
Safety Concerns Raised
"Clearly there's been a miscommunication at some point but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"
"We fail to grasp how on a live track safety personnel can be allowed to just dash across the track in that manner. I'm clueless about the cause, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but this absolutely cannot recur"
Official Investigation Underway
F1's overseeing organization, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is currently investigating the situation
"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was informed that fragments were located on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the FIA
"On lap three, track officials were notified and made ready to go onto the racing surface and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"
"Immediately when it was understood that Lawson had entered the pits, the instructions to dispatch personnel were rescinded and a caution signal was shown in that zone"
"Our inquiry continues what occurred subsequent to that time"
