The UK authorities has included 11 more nations to its travel advisory roster concerning the risks of methanol poisoning from adulterated beverages.

This revised advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the frequency of documented incidents" of methanol poisoning.

Only recently, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing register, in response to several serious incidents including the deadly death of half a dozen tourists in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being cautions that as little as tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can cause vision loss or death within 12–48 hours.

Exactly what is Methanol and In what way is it Employed?

Methanol is a toxic industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and paint solvent. It is not intended for human consumption.

While it is inherently formed during the production of spirits, reputable manufacturers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for human consumption through the distillation process.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to save money, and since it is tasteless and smell-free, it is extremely challenging to notice.

Government Advice for Travellers

Authorities official a senior official stated that every traveler should be aware of the symptoms of toxic alcohol contamination.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, choose trusted places and steer clear of unlicensed drinks or free shots," the minister said.

"If something seems unusual, for example a headache that's much more severe than typical or blurred eyesight – get medical help immediately."

The full list of countries noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol toxicity presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
